Somer is a young, dynamic and adventurous orchestra of young professionals that plays in various line-ups. The orchestra is under the direction of conductor Rolf Verbeek.
Somer is characterized by seeking connection with the public, playing at unusual locations and collaborating with other (art) disciplines and non-regular parties. With Somer, a stage has been created in Drenthe where young professionals can develop themselves.

Somer is named after Louis Henri Somer from Assen, a gifted violinist and composer. He studied violin at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Cologne and Paris and was concertmaster of the Groningen Music Association, now called Noord Nederlands Orkest. Louis Somer's music has not been performed since his death in 1966, which is unjustified, while the music certainly deserves a stage.

In addition to his position as conductor of the Somer Chamber Orchestra, Rolf Verbeek has been a permanent guest conductor of Camerata RCO (members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra) since 2019. Last season, 2 CDs were released with this company, Bruckner's 6th symphony in his own arrangement and the CD Sehnsucht with soloist Barbara Hannigan. In recent years, Hannigan fulfilled the role of mentor within the Equilibrium Young Artists program in which Rolf served as assistant conductor at many international orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Rolf conducted many orchestras such as Phil Zuid, the North Netherlands Orchestra and Phion. After winning the Kersjes Prize in 2022, he will make his debut with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra this season.
